Northwest Highway Car Accidents: What to Do First (Chicago Guide)

Northwest Highway runs through some of the busiest intersections on Chicago's NW Side — Harlem, Nagle, Devon, Central. Crashes here are common, and what you do in the first 60 minutes shapes both your recovery and your insurance claim.
The first 60 minutes: safety and documentation
If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. Move vehicles out of traffic only if it's safe. Once everyone is safe, your job becomes documentation.
- Call Chicago Police (911) — never leave the scene without a police report
- Photograph all vehicles, license plates, road conditions, traffic signals, and visible injuries
- Get the other driver's name, license, insurance, and phone number
- Get contact information from any witnesses
- Note the exact intersection and direction of travel
The first 24 hours: medical evaluation
Even if you feel fine, see a medical professional within 24 hours. Adrenaline masks pain, and serious injuries — concussions, internal bleeding, spinal damage — don't always present immediately. If you have any signs of head injury, severe pain, or trauma, go to an ER.
For the much more common scenario — neck pain, back stiffness, headaches, soreness — a same-day chiropractic evaluation is the right first step. A NW Chicago chiropractor can identify whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and spinal misalignment that ER doctors typically don't address.
The first week: build your treatment record
Consistent treatment in the first 7–10 days is the single most important factor in both physical recovery and insurance settlement value. This is when treatment plans start, baseline imaging happens (if warranted), and your medical record begins to document the full extent of your injuries.
- Attend every scheduled chiropractic appointment
- Begin physical therapy if recommended
- Document your symptoms daily — pain levels, what you can't do
- Keep all medical paperwork organized
- Avoid posting photos or activity on social media
Insurance: what to say (and not say)
Your own insurance company should be notified promptly. The other driver's insurance will likely call you within days, often offering a quick settlement. Do not give recorded statements, do not accept early settlement offers, and do not sign anything without an attorney reviewing it. Early offers are almost always for a small fraction of what your case is worth.
When to call an attorney
For any accident with injuries, missed work, or significant vehicle damage, consult a personal injury attorney within the first week. Most offer free consultations and only charge if they win your case. If you don't have one, Chicago Accident Network can introduce you to experienced NW Chicago PI attorneys at no cost.
